Virtualization
CAITI has its own virtualisation platform at The Ada Byron Research Building which enables virtualised desktops and servers to be offered.
Through the virtualised desktops each researcher has access to a virtualised Windows or Linux installation which can be accessed from any location via the Internet. This can be done either by installing a specific client or using a web browser with HTML 5 support. The advantages that this technology provides are numerous: backups to server, hardware updates as and when needed, access from more constrained devices (tablets, mobiles etc).
Moreover, the virtualisation of the servers enables them to be configured in computer clusters to allow uninterrupted services (high availablity, regular backups, reduncy at various levels, ...)
